Standing Guard: Keeping Children Safe in the Digital Age

National Children’s Month this November 2025 highlights a powerful and urgent call: “End Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) and Child Sexual Abuse or Exploitation Materials (CSAEM): Fight for the Safety and Rights of Children!” This message reminds us that the internet, while useful and entertaining, can also be a dangerous place for children. In the Philippines, online abuse has become a serious problem, making it more important than ever for families, schools, communities, and the government to work together. Every child deserves to grow up safe, respected, and protected—both online and offline.

To respond to this growing threat, the government enacted Republic Act No. 11930, a landmark law aimed at strengthening the fight against online child abuse. This law sets stricter penalties for offenders and requires digital platforms, financial institutions, and other organizations to actively help prevent and report these crimes. By doing so, the Philippines shows its strong commitment to protecting children and holding abusers accountable. The law sends a clear message: exploiting children will not be tolerated.

Supporting this law is the creation of the National Coordination Center against OSAEC and CSAEM (NCC-OSAEC-CSAEM). This body ensures that different government agencies work together efficiently to combat online abuse. While this coordination is a major step forward, true protection goes beyond arrests and penalties. Children who have been harmed need proper care, counseling, and long-term support so they can heal emotionally and regain their sense of safety and self-worth. The government must continue investing in programs that focus on recovery and prevention, especially in remote and underserved communities.

Ultimately, protecting children is a shared responsibility. Laws and agencies are important, but they are only effective if people actively support them. Parents must educate their children about online safety, teachers must guide them, and companies must create safer digital spaces. When we say “Ipaglaban!”, we are making a promise—to stand up for children’s rights and to build a digital world where they can learn, play, and grow without fear.
